A longstanding beef between two groups in Enfield has resulted in March and April shootings, according to Lieutenant Jerry Powell of the town’s police department.

The last shooting occurred on April 14 at West Alsop Street and arrests have been made over the last week Powell said.

Enfield officers and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to West Alsop Street after receiving a report of gunfire exchanges, Powell said in a press release.

Investigation led to an arrest warrant being filed for 19-year-old Raheem Cooper.

Cooper faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a weapon within the city limits.

The following day, Detective Randy White saw Cooper in the front yard. When Cooper saw Detective White, he ran into the residence.

After other officers arrived, Detective White made contact with the resident, Theodore Willie Bell Hendricks.

Hendricks stated to Detective White that Cooper was not at the residence.

After Detective White began preparing a search warrant for the residence, Cooper then surrendered and Hendricks, 54, was subsequently arrested and charged with harboring a fugitive. Hendricks was processed and released on a $1,000 unsecured bond. Hendricks has a May 14 court date in Halifax.

Cooper was confined in the Halifax County Detention Center under a $50,000.00 unsecured bond, and made bond on April 16.

Warrants were also issued for Kionte Conyers, 22, of Enfield.

Conyers is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, going armed to the terror of the public and discharging a weapon in the city limits.

Conyers turned himself in to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Sunday and is presently being held on a $200,000 bond.

Further investigation revealed that during the exchange of gunfire, a passing CSX freight train was struck twice.

Investigation led to a charge of shooting at a train against Cooper. Bullets hit the side of a train car and struck an airline, which caused the train to make an emergency stop in Whitakers. The stop delayed the mainline for about an hour, Powell said this evening.

Meanwhile, investigation of a March 24 shooting at the same location shows two house were struck by multiple stray rounds and led to further charges against Cooper.

From that shooting he faces two counts of discharge a weapon into occupied property, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Cooper was arrested at his residence Sunday and was being held on a $100,000 secured bond.

Also charged in that shooting was Travis Sentell “Gump” Johnson, who faces counts of attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Johnson has turned himself in at the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and is currently in jail on a $100,000 bond.

Conyers also faces charges in the March shooting —attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Powell said while no one was injured the manner in which the shooting was carried out allegedly warranted attempted first-degree murder counts.

He said it us unclear what the beef is about.
