A Roanoke Rapids man allegedly responsible for trying to break into an ATM on East Tenth Street turned himself in, apparently after hearing or seeing he was wanted through news account.

Roanoke Rapids police charged Thomas Kenneth Stone Jr., 53, of 147 Keener Drive, with misdemeanor breaking and entering into a paper currency machine and damage to property.

Police opined he used a sledgehammer to break into the machine sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning.

He got no money from the machine, which is located near CVS and a tire store.

Stone is a registered sex offender.

Captain Andy Jackson of the police department said motive other than trying to obtain money was unclear.

Stone was given a $2,000 bond and March 5 court date.

Jackson said the the misdemeanor breaking and entering a paper currency machine charge must carry a conviction for the second offense to be a felony.
