An inmate who escaped from a work detail in Northampton County Tuesday has been charged with misdemeanor escape from a local jail, according to court records.

The warrant says that Michael Elijah Haddock allegedly escaped from the lawful custody of a Northampton County Detention Center sergeant.

Haddock had been sentenced in Pitt County last month to 12 months under the Statewide Misdemeanor Confinement Program for DWI, according to court records, and had been serving his time in Northampton, the sheriff’s office there said Tuesday. The state-run program places convicted misdemeanants serving sentences greater than 90 days into available beds at county jails across North Carolina rather than state prisons.

He had been assigned as a trusty on a work crew Tuesday morning, but allegedly jumped from a moving van on Highway 186 near Cornwallis Road later that afternoon.

He was apprehended about 30 minutes later following a multi-agency search.

The search included the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Garysburg Police Department, Garysburg Volunteer Fire Department, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department, and Northampton County Emergency Management.
