Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting in which two people received non-life threatening injuries Friday night.

Another person with the two who were shot was not injured, Captain Charles Vaught said this morning.

The shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Roanoke Avenue near Sam Powell Dairy Road, Vaught said in a statement.

When officers arrived to respond, they received information the victims were at the hospital for treatment. One was transported to Vidant and the other was treated and released from Halifax Regional.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8:45 p.m. as the three were sitting inside a vehicle parked in a driveway. The victims were ambushed, Vaught said in the statement and numerous shots were fired.

The vehicle was started and the victims made it to the hospital.

Vaught said investigators are working on leads in the case. He said, however, a motive has not been established.

It was not immediately clear if the shooting was the act of one person or others. The total amount of shots fired was not immediately known as well as the type or types of weapon or weapons used.

The police department is soliciting help from the public in the case and encourages anyone with information to call 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
