Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls have put up a new mural at Second Street and Roanoke Avenue.
The mural was a joint effort between the two organizations as well as the community, said Joe Long, one of the Trail Life leaders.
“It was a big project, but they got it done,” Long said in a statement. “Tina Gregory has helped us with this project and is going to help us with a few more touchups now that it is on the wall, but it really came out great.”
Art students from KIPP came for a day and helped with some of the details. “Our Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls Troop NC-0100 put a lot of time in this and all told, we had over 30 people working on this project, which took about two months to do,” Long said.
The Halifax County Arts Council sponsored the mural with a grant as a way to bring art to youth. “The mural depicts healthy outdoor activities that people can do in the Roanoke Valley, all of which are things that our troop enjoys doing,” Long said. “We are an outdoor adventure group and we thought this was a great theme to use for the mural.”
Dominion Power got the mural in place Tuesday through help of employees Michael Shearin and Doug Daughtrey.
Meanwhile, the two troops are beginning their annual recruitment drive and will be having a meeting Monday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 715 Jackson Street.
Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls is for boys and girls ages 5-18 and teaches adventure, character, and leadership through a program centering on outdoor experiences.
