Roanoke Rapids police are investigating acts of vandalism which have occurred at the new shelter at Chaloner Recreation Center.

Captain Jamie Hardy said in a statement the vandalism has occurred over the past three weekends.

Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Manning said this afternoon the siding of the shelter near the splash pad was kicked from the inside until the siding was knocked off. Department staff reinstalled the siding, she said.

Saturday, Hardy said, at approximately 11:45 p.m. several people set fire to debris under the shelter which caused a side wall to be burned. The next morning around 8:30 a.m. individuals came back and re-lit the area which was burned.

Manning said the department has not determined how to fix the fire damage.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police department at 252-533-2810, Investigator Morgan Worrell at 252-532-0268, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

City Manager Joseph Scherer told council at its last meeting additional cameras have been installed in the park area.
