The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District has canceled all field trips scheduled outside Halifax County.

The field trip restrictions go into effect Friday and are due to the increased threat of the novel coronavirus, the school system said in an alert this morning.

School system spokesman Les Atkins said this morning staff is evaluating whether this restriction will apply to sporting events. The school system is in contact with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association on the matter.

Said the morning alert: “This is simply a safety precaution to help ensure the health of our students and staff. This cancellation will remain in place until further notice. Staff members will work with vendors to receive refunds on all canceled field trips.”

The decision comes as the World Health Organization this week classified the virus as a pandemic.

Vidant Health reported on its website North Carolina Poison Control is partnering with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to monitor COVID-19 concerns.

A Coronavirus Helpline (866-462-3821) has been set up and is being staffed by the North Carolina Poison Control 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They offer information in English and Spanish.

The state department of Health and Human Services reports on its website the case count for COVID-19 in North Carolina is one confirmed positive case and seven presumptive positive cases.

Meanwhile, Signature HealthCARE of Roanoke Rapids reported on its website it is closely monitoring all updates on the matter and will follow CDC and other appropriate government agency directives.

For now, regular facility visiting hours have been temporarily suspended.

Alternative means of communication with residents are readily available, including virtual means such as phone, video communication and other means.
