The town of Weldon has declared a state of emergency and enacted a curfew which will go into effect Tuesday at noon.

The state of emergency declaration takes effect Tuesday at noon and the curfew will be from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m. until further notice. Weldon police Chief Chris Davis said the curfew goes into effect Tuesday night.

“I have determined that an emergency exists in the Town of Weldon because of the imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, injury, loss of life or property imposed by the coronavirus and resulting COVID-19,” Mayor Julia Meacham wrote in the declaration which she signed this afternoon. “ … as a result of the above-described emergency, I have determined that public safety authorities will be unable to maintain public order or afford adequate protection for lives or property, and … declaring a State of Emergency and imposing the restrictions and prohibitions ordered herein is necessary to maintain order and protect health, safety, and welfare, and to secure property.”

The emergency area covered by this state of emergency shall be all areas within the jurisdiction of the incorporated areas of the town.

Under the curfew, travel upon any public street, alley, or roadway or upon any other public property is prohibited. Exceptions include those citizens in search of emergency medical assistance and individuals engaged in essential business and governmental operations as defined by Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 121.

Town government is still operating, Meacham said in the declaration. Access to the interior of all town buildings is restricted. Citizens are strongly urged to conduct all town business via the internet or phone until further notice. Citizens with specific questions should contact the department with which they have business. “Citizens are urged to stay home if possible. Citizens are reminded to comply with the restrictions and recommendations of Executive Order 121, including the order to maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet from any other person and not gather in groups of more than 10 persons. Citizens are reminded not to call 911 except in the case of actual emergencies.”

Halifax County

Halifax County Public Health System Director Bruce Robistow said in a statement this afternoon the county reports one additional positive COVID-19 case, bringing the total to 11. Robistow reported to county commissioners this morning there had been 10 positive cases.

He said there have been seven negative tests since last Friday. “We have not had deaths, and several of our positive patients are now doing very well. We have also received an additional 35 gallons of hand sanitizer from Weldon Mills Distillery that is being distributed to first responders and health facilities throughout our county, as well as surrounding counties. Our team is doing very well, doing great work, with positive attitudes.”
