A Roanoke Rapids man faces child abuse charges after deputies on Thursday observed marks and bruises over a 7-year-old’s body.

Arrest warrants for felony intentional child abuse and felony child abuse lodged against Tony Lee Creekmore, 33, were not available for public inspection in the eCourts system.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said that Deputy J. Butler and Corporal M. Kalkbrenner responded to a domestic call on Coleus Lane in Roanoke Rapids and observed that the child had bruises and red marks on their legs.

Further investigation revealed the child had marks and bruises all over their body, and deputies determined the injuries appeared to have been inflicted by an extension cord because several of them appeared to be plug-shaped.

Harris said when the child was asked about the injuries, they allegedly identified Creekmore.

Creekmore, who Harris said is in a dating relationship with the child’s mother, was charged. He was denied bail and awaits a July 23 district court appearance.

The Halifax County Department of Social Services was notified and the child, who remains in the custody of their mother, was treated for the injuries, Harris said.

According to court records, Creekmore has pending district court dates in Pitt and Northampton counties.

In June, he was served a warrant by the Pitt County barracks of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for driving while his license was revoked, failure to wear a seat belt, and failure to secure a passenger under the age of 16.

ECU Health Police in Greenville charged him with stealing a license plate in November 2025, as well as reckless driving. He has pending disposition hearing dates in September for those charges.

In Northampton County, he has a pending charge of larceny of a motor vehicle. No probable cause was found for an associated charge of second-degree kidnapping that was filed by the Garysburg Police Department, according to court documents.
