A Weldon man died following a weekend shooting at an apartment complex, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Major Anzell Harris said sheriff's deputies and officers with the Weldon Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the area of the Dogwood Park Apartments.

While units were en route, Halifax County Emergency Communications received a call confirming a person, identified as 38-year-old Moncrinique Clements of Weldon, had been shot and was lying on the ground. 

Arriving deputies rendered immediate aid to the victim, who was initially transported to ECU Health North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids before being airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville.

Sheriff's office investigators processed the crime scene. 

On Sunday evening investigators were notified that  Clements had succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
