A 28-year-old Roanoke Rapids woman died on Highway 158 near Oak Grove Church Road following a head-on crash Thursday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Trooper Danny Edwards was dispatched to the scene around 10:30 p.m., according to an initial report.
Brittany Nicole Matthews of Leaf Street was traveling east on Highway 158 when she went left of the centerline and struck another vehicle in the westbound lane.
Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 5-year-old child who was in a child seat in the back was airlifted to Vidant in Greenville with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Edwards said the 2000 Honda Accord which Matthews was driving struck a 2018 Toyota Tundra driven by 63-year-old Rebecca Currin of Oxford. There were four passengers in the vehicle Currin was driving. All the occupants, including the driver of the Tundra, were treated at Halifax Regional Medical Center for injuries which Edwards said did not appear to be life-threatening.
Edwards said the contributing factor appears to be Matthews going left of the centerline.
