An 81-year-old Hollister woman died at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville Monday after being airlifted there following a crash.

Trooper R.P. Dennis of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Bettie Evans was traveling south on Highway 48 near Sam Powell Dairy Road when she ran off the roadway in a 1992 Chrysler LeBaron.

The crash occurred shortly after 2:15 p.m.

The car traveled through a ditch and into a driveway. After coming into the driveway the vehicle went back into the roadway where it sideswiped a vehicle on Highway 48.

Evans was airlifted to Greenville where she died.

The driver of the vehicle which was sideswiped sustained minor injuries but did not require treatment.

It is unclear what caused her to go off the roadway. Dennis said alcohol and speed have been ruled out as factors.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office with fire and EMS provided assistance in closing the highway so the helicopter could land.
