An Enfield man was arrested and charged in a shooting this afternoon which has left the victim in serious condition.

Captain Chuck Hasty of the Enfield Police Department said Jeryl Davie Jones, 72, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He received a $50,000 bond and October 14 court date.

Hasty said this evening the shooting occurred outside a business in the 200 block of South McDaniel Street around 1:45 p.m.

He declined to name the victim, who he said was shot with a handgun.

He said police are continuing to develop a motive for the shooting.

In the statement Hasty said when officers arrived they found the victim with a gunshot wound. They also located the purported shooter and detained him.

The victim was carried to Vidant North and then to a trauma center for further treatment.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted.
