An 18-year-old has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 10-year-old child.

Christopher Moss of Hollister surrendered to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, Chief Deputy Scott Hall said in a statement.

Hall said Moss is related to the girl who died on February 6. He said the death of the child occurred when a firearm was handled in an unsafe manner when it was loaded. He declined elaboration.

Detective Matt Brown charged Moss after consulting with the district attorney’s office.

He received a $15,000 bond and awaits a March 17 court date.

The sheriff’s office said at the time deputies responded to Bobolink Trail in the Hollister area around 11:30 p.m. after receiving a call a juvenile was shot.
