A crash on Highway 903 outside Scotland Neck Sunday morning claimed the life of a 14-year-old, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Sergeant A.S. Genao said, according to a preliminary report by Trooper T.D. “Bo” Forsht, Edward Lee Moody, 51, of Scotland Neck, was traveling east on Highway 903 just outside the town limits shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Moody struck the rear-end of a vehicle in which Syhem Purvis was a passenger.

The collision caused the vehicle Purvis was in to go off the roadway and strike a mailbox. The vehicle the teenager was in then struck a tree and ejected both the driver and Purvis, who died from the injuries he sustained.

Forsht has charged Moody with felony death by motor vehicle, DWI, careless and reckless driving and failure to reduce speed. Moody has a July 12 district court date set.

A vehicle download will determine the speed of the vehicle about 5 seconds before the crash occurred as well as Moody’s reactionary time and braking time, Genao said.
