The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Chief Deputy Scott Hall:

On Monday Detective Sergeant R.G. Jenkins met with officials from PETA and opened an animal cruelty case for a deceased dog found in Halifax County.

After following up with interviews and examining evidence, Ernest Mannix Barber, 50, of Joy Drive, Roanoke Rapids, was charged and arrested with one count of felonious killing of an animal by starvation and two counts of violating the county’s tethering ordinance.

He posted a $10,000 bond and received a July 22 court date.

A PETA fieldworker found the dog, Star, dead of heatstroke, on May 28.

On Tuesday at approximately 2 p.m., Deputy D. Bybee conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Lexus driven by Nashawn Hakeem Biggz El for passing in a no passing zone.

Initially, Biggz El presented a fraudulent Texas driver’s license identifying himself as David Johnson.

In the course of the traffic stop, his true identity was discovered.

He was found to have an outstanding order of commitment for failing to pay child support and had a suspended driver’s license.

Also during the traffic stop, an odor of marijuana was detected coming from the vehicle.

A probable cause search yielded approximately 62 ounces of marijuana and THC edibles in 118 individual packages.

He was cited for driving while his license was revoked, passing in a no passing zone, and providing false information to an officer.

He was arrested for felony possession of marijuana and placed in the Halifax County Detention Center on a $2,000 secured bond.
