The number of total positive cases of COVID-19 since March of 2020 has surpassed the 6,000 mark as 193 new positive cases have been reported since last week.
This brings the total number of positives since last year to 6,183.
There have been 5,743 — 93.95 percent — recoveries and there are currently 254 current patients. There remain 116 related deaths in the county.
Halifax County Health Director Bruce Robistow said this afternoon, “We added 44 since Monday. Cases are skyrocketing.”
Zero percent of the new positive cases are related to the original COVID-19 virus, Robistow said. “It’s all from the Delta variant. Everyone needs to reconsider or consider getting vaccinated and during this spike in positive cases we need to get back to wearing masks when indoors in public.”
As the numbers spike “incredibly high,” he said, “There is a 400 in one chance if not vaccinated that you could be hospitalized. There’s a 300 to one chance of dying from COVID if not vaccinated.”
The health director said he listened to Governor Roy Cooper’s briefing Wednesday. “The exciting information out of that was the booster shot will be out as quick as September 20. I’m excited about that.”
Robistow also praised a decision by the Roanoke Rapids school board this week to reconsider its previous decision on masks and mandate masks during school. “I appreciate the leadership of the school board in making a challenging yet appropriate decision.”
