Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a shooting which occurred at a traffic light at Old Farm Road and Becker Drive this morning.

Chief Bobby Martin said the shooting occurred shortly before 10:30.

One person was injured but the police chief said the injury was not life-threatening.

Another person is in custody. Martin said the person in custody called law enforcement to tell them he was waiting for them on Stevens Street. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office took that person in custody.

The police department was not in a position to immediately release names of the two people involved — the one in custody and the one who was injured.

Investigators processed a Toyota Camry in the parking lot of the nearby BP convenience store and gas station. The Camry was marked with tape in three spots to indicate where bullets struck the vehicle, officers said at the scene.

Martin said one weapon each was found in the two vehicles involved.

The police chief said the people involved were apparently familiar with each other and that the shooting might be related to an argument between the two.

It was not immediately clear whether both drivers fired shots.

Sexual battery

Martin said in a statement that on Thursday the police department served an outstanding warrant to 70-year-old Trinh Khanh of Roanoke Rapids for sexual battery.

The warrant was issued after a complaint was filed against the man for inappropriately touching a customer while they were in a business.

While police investigated, the victim in the case went to the magistrate’s office to take out a warrant on the man, who received a $3,000 unsecured bond and a November 9 court date.
