Roanoke Rapids police identified the two pedestrians struck and killed early Sunday morning as 31-year-old Mexican nationals who were part of a traveling carnival.

Police Chief Bobby Martin said Nuria Martinez Carrillo and Isidro Lopez Santos were the two who died in the collision which occurred on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway at Premier Boulevard shortly before 1 a.m.

Martin said Sunday the two who perished in the collision were part of a group of eight who were crossing the roadway to apparently get to their motel rooms. Six yielded for oncoming traffic while the two who died did not.

The carnival was traveling through the area to an unknown destination, Martin said. “This is a tragic incident and the Roanoke Rapids Police Department sends its thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by this incident.”

No charges will be lodged against the driver in the crash.
