The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Sunday shortly after 1:30 p.m. Officer J. Melvin was patrolling the area of Old Farm and Rollingwood roads when he noticed a vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit.

Melvin turned around to conduct a traffic stop but the driver, later identified as Jamonte Williams, 19, failed to immediately stop.

Williams continued down Park Avenue and eventually ran into a dead end near Woodland Road. 

Officers detected the odor of marijuana, but no narcotics were located at the time. 

Williams, from the Halifax area, was charged with flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, fail to heed for blue lights and siren and speeding.

He received a $1,000 bond and December 17 court date.

On Sunday Officer C. Roberts was patrolling in the area Hinson Street near Branch Avenue when he noticed a vehicle that appeared to be traveling faster than the posted speed. 

Roberts conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and while approaching the driver’s side he detected a strong odor of marijuana.

The driver, identified as Kehaad Hawkins, 30, was still holding a blunt in his hand and the officer seized it.

Officer J. DeSare arrived to assist with the stop and the check of the vehicle, which yielded  15 grams of marijuana in a pouch, 3.5 grams of marijuana in a resealable bag, scales, 3 grams of THC wax, and many other items of drug paraphernalia. 

Hawkins of Roanoke Rapids was charged on an outstanding order for arrest for which he received a $10,000 bond and also faces charges of possession of schedule VI, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, and speeding.

He has a court date set in January.

Friday shortly before 7:30 p.m. Roberts responded to the area of Rochelle Pond about a stolen phone.

Roberts and Officer T. Strickland walked the area looking for the potential suspect in the phone theft when they located a person sitting on a bench who was the person believed to have stolen the device. The person was identified as Christopher Whitley, 35, of the Roanoke Rapids area.

Whitley explained he was in an argument with his wife and took the phone when he left. 

Officers also noticed an uncapped needle with a brown substance identified as fentanyl loaded in it at the man’s feet. 

Whitley was charged with felony possession of Schedule II and possession of drug paraphernalia. He received a $3,000 bond and December 16 court date.
