The Halifax County Health Department today added 66 new positive cases of COVID-19 to its data, bringing the total since March of last year to 8,227.

The department also added one death related to the virus which brings the total to 146.

As of today’s report, the county has climbed back into the red category, which shows a high level of transmission.

Health Department Director Bruce Robistow said it is estimated that the Omicron variant is responsible for 70 percent of the new cases in just the last week.

The numbers reported by the health department are the reason the county has climbed back into the red level, “due to the consistently increasing new positive cases as well as more than doubling the percent positives in the last three weeks.”

The percent positive number is 6.5 percent an increase since last week when it was 5 percent.

Said Robistow: “It’s disheartening to see another spike approaching alongside a new variant once again. This is happening and will continue to happen until more people get vaccinated and we reach herd immunity. Getting vaccinated is the only way we will gain control of COVID-19 and render it to an endemic and manageable state such as the flu. If you have not been vaccinated please reconsider for yourself and for patriotism.”

The numbers for recoveries and current cases were not available in today’s report.

COVID-19 Virus in Wastewater

COVID measurements in the wastewater have plateaued over the past few weeks and continue to decline. This is another data point to aid in how the health department scientifically measures COVID-19 in the county.

“Wastewater is just another method to help us best assess counties throughout the state,” Robistow said.
