The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Halifax County has declined along with the percentage of positive cases, the health department reported today.

Since March of 2020 there have been 13,352 total positive cases with 442 new positive cases reported today.

The health department did add seven deaths related to the virus to its data today, bringing the total to 162.

Information on recoveries and current cases was not available today.

The report also notes that Halifax County, which several weeks ago had the second highest number of cases in the state, is now ranked at 63.

“It’s good to see our number of positive cases on a decline,” health Director Bruce Robistow said. “Our percent positives have also declined but remain at a dangerously high level. Sadly, our number of deaths for the past week is substantial compared to previous weeks.”

With three sub-variants of omicron now identified, Robistow said, “This virus is predicted to continue to mutate and the only way to slow its progression is by us protecting each other by reaching herd immunity.”
