With the money now raised, a monument honoring veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan will be placed in Veterans Park.

Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening approved the placement of the monument, the idea of Toni Outland, who came before the panel three months ago to discuss the idea.

The monument will flank the left side of the flag poles and original monument in the park while the existing Korea-Vietnam monument is to the right of the original monument.

Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon told council Outland had raised the necessary funds for the monument. Outland said in September cost of the monument was $12,000.

Simeon also thanked Outland for the effort in making the monument a reality. “Thank you for what you’ve done and what you’re bringing to the community.”

Simeon said it will take approximately eight weeks to complete the monument after it is ordered.

He said it would take another one to two weeks to put the memorial in place at the park.
