A checking station Sunday led to the arrest of a Jackson man on drug and weapons counts.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said the arrest of Keith Person, 22, occurred as Officer D. Norfleet and Master Officer A. Bradley were assisting the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office with the checkpoint.

Norfleet encountered a man later identified as Person and while checking his license the officer detected the scent of marijuana.

With Person pulled over, he exited the vehicle and a small amount of marijuana was discovered.

During a search of the vehicle more marijuana was located in a console and a loaded .22-caliber handgun was located in the driver’s side door. An extended search led to more marijuana, two open containers of alcohol, and a scale.

Person was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, unsealed wine or liquor in the passenger area, possession of schedule VI, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed under a $15,000 bond and received a March 24 court date.

The officers seized a total of 25.5 grams of marijuana from the driver and the vehicle.

“We appreciate Lieutenant Roy Rooks and his squad for working with us to help make this area safer by removing drugs and stolen weapons from the street,” Martin said.
