One student sustained stab wounds and another is in custody following an assault at the Manning Elementary School track this evening.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said in a statement officers responded to the track around 5:30 p.m. after receiving an assault call.

Officers found a victim with stab wounds to his body. The victim was transported to Vidant North and was scheduled to be flown to another facility.

Martin said a suspect was located and is in custody. The police department has informed the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District of its investigation.

No further information was immediately available as of this report and police continue to investigate.

The assault occurred after track practice.

In an alert sent to parents the school system said it wanted to make them aware of an “alleged assault” involving “one of our high school students.”

The alert then repeated information provided by the police.
