Halifax County Schools has partnered with Rolanda L. Mitchell to serve as a consultant for its school counselors.
This collaboration will provide targeted training and support in areas including, but not limited to, social-emotional learning, risk assessment, career and college readiness, and parent engagement.
The project will also use data and research to shine a light on the work counselors do in the school system.
Mitchell is an assistant teaching professor at North Carolina State College of Education and her role as a consultant is to strengthen the work of the counselors. “In the first phase of this collaboration, pertinent information was gathered to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth. For example, counselors were able to identify topics for professional development, individual and collective needs, and goals for a comprehensive counseling program,” she said.

“Halifax County Schools are committed to creating a supportive and positive learning environment to address the needs of the whole student,” Superintendent Eric Cunningham said. “Partnering with Dr. Mitchell will be a great opportunity for school counselors to gain additional insight and resources that will allow them to continue to focus on the whole child.”
Mitchell said, “Halifax County Schools is staffed by professionals who have a deep and genuine love for the students and families of their community. Under the leadership of Dr. Cunningham, the school counselors are working hard to meet the personal, social, academic, and career needs of their students in support of the mission and vision of their department.”
Mitchell said during the initial collaborative meeting she learned a great deal about the waves that impact children, including limited resources and lack of access to the career and college readiness tools available to students in other districts. “While stakeholders fight for the resources Halifax County is owed (such as Leandro v. State of North Carolina), school counselors show up every day and make the most of what's currently available. As a result, they provide safe spaces for students to grow, learn and reach their full potential.”
