Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Scott Hall confirmed today that the sheriff’s office incorrectly identified Shafika Gwynn Tuesday as the mother of a 4-year-old child who died in a gun mishap.

Hall said this information was also confirmed today through the investigating detective.

The child’s mother, Channell Braxton, said today she is the biological mother and only custodial parent of the 4-year-old.

Gwynn, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged Monday with failing to store a firearm to protect minors.
