Elementary students in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District received book bags from the high school’s senior class as well as four boxes of children's books.

Connor Johnson, student body president, said the student council had been focusing on a mission to help out fellow students under the leadership of advisors Gary Edwards, Kelly Sparks and Edward Gardner.

The project had started with the senior class initially holding an elementary book bag day for nostalgia. “When the students realized this was a charitable opportunity they took full advantage of it and turned it into a book bag drive,” Johnson said.

Encouraging the class of 2023 to donate book bags, they ended up with around 20 as well as the boxes of books.

“As students we recognize that there are many students who lack or go without,” Johnson said. “We wanted to do something as an organization to help. This of course cannot go without recognizing all the seniors that participated. I want to thank them all for making this a success.” Johnson said the student council hopes to continue these service projects throughout the year to give back to the district and the community.
