The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has launched a security camera registration program in which residents or businesses can volunteer to register their systems.

“By submitting information residents of Halifax County are helping to prevent and deter crime,” said Lieutenant Shane Guyant.

Guyant said the program can help deputies and investigators quickly locate the nearest cameras when a crime occurs.

If residents or businesses choose to register their systems the sheriff’s office will contact the registrant and request a video if needed in an investigation.

The sheriff’s office can’t access anyone’s camera, Guyant said. “We simply know where cameras are, which is helpful if a crime happens nearby.”

The registration is free and does not require any hardware or subscription. Registrants can opt out of the program at any time.

Only authorized users can access the information. “We don't have direct access to anyone’s cameras. We will only use the registry to contact registrants to request footage if there's a crime in their area.”

Guyant said the data is classified as protected and is not public data. The information can’t be disclosed in a public data request.
