One man was arrested and another is being sought in an assault which occurred last Friday night.

The victim’s child, an 8-year-old girl, called 911 after her mother’s phone was taken, Captain Jamie Hardy of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said.

The child told dispatchers that her mother was being assaulted and bleeding and that her uncle was pointing a gun at her, Hardy said.

The assault occurred shortly before 11 p.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered the victim sustained several injuries to her face and head from being struck.

The victim identified the assailants as her husband and brother-in-law and told officers they had assaulted her, threatened to kill her, stole her purse, money, and cellphone and then left before police arrived.

The victim’s husband, Douglas Gray, was arrested the following day. He faces charges of aid and abet armed robbery and misdemeanor child abuse. He was scheduled to appear in district court today and will have another district court appearance on October 24, according to the state court calendar. He received a $3,000 secured bond.

Douglas Gray’s brother — Gene Gray III — is wanted and warrants have been issued for his arrest on charges of common law robbery, assault with a deadly weapon in the presence of a minor, assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, and interfering with emergency communications, which reflects the theft of the victim’s phone.

Hardy said there is a possibility that Gray III could be in New York. He also has a Carolina Beach address.

The victim was transported to ECU North for treatment.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gray III is encouraged to contact the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
