A check on a suspicious vehicle in the area of Arbutus Drive and East Fifth Street Tuesday led to the arrests of two people on drug charges.
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said officers C. Roberts and D. Harrison were patrolling in the area shortly after 4:30 a.m. when they noticed the suspicious vehicle and what appeared to be an attempt by its occupants to hide from them. The occupants went into a driveway and turned off the headlights. A few minutes later they restarted the vehicle and backed out.
Roberts stopped the vehicle due to the suspicious behavior and because there have been a high number of vehicle break-ins in the area.

Roberts determined marijuana was in the vehicle and a search was conducted. A search was also conducted on the occupants — Michael Fahey and Vicki Barber, both 34, and both from Roanoke Rapids.
Harrison located marijuana and what appeared to be methamphetamine in a black bag.
Fahey and Barber were detained and the search of the vehicle continued, yielding 1.29 grams of a white powder suspected to be fentanyl, a black pouch containing plastic bags with 2.52 grams of meth, 1.45 grams of marijuana, two crack pipes and a digital scale.
Fahey was charged with possession of schedule I, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He received a $4,000 unsecured bond and October 28 court date.
Barber was charged with possession of schedule II and four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. She received the same bond and court date as Fahey.
