The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Sunday shortly before 12:30 a.m. Officer N. Powell responded to the area of Chockoyotte Street after a shots fired call.

Powell was notified that a man in the 400 block of Chockoyotte Street was trying to get into a home to get medical attention.

Officers saw the man on the front porch and learned he had been shot twice in the lower leg.

Officers provided care until EMS arrived. He was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate.

Outstanding warrants and drug charges

On Sunday around 8 p.m. Sergeant D. Newsome was in the 1000 block of Jefferson Street when he noticed a vehicle at a closed business.

As he checked on the vehicle a female passenger exited and spoke with the officer.

Newsome was familiar with another passenger in the vehicle — Taeune Johnson. Newsome was aware Johnson, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, had outstanding warrants.

Johnson was served two outstanding warrants for assault with a deadly weapon.

Newsome located .50 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl and charged Johnson with possession of schedule II and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was placed under a $2,000 bond for the drug charges and a $3,000 bond for the outstanding warrants.

He has district court dates on Thursday and Friday.

Meth charges

On Sunday shortly after 9 p.m. Master Officer J. Melvin met Andrew Hester at the police department regarding outstanding warrants on the 53-year-old Roanoke Rapids man.

A search of Hester revealed a cigarette pack with a folded dollar bill. The bill contained crystal meth.

Hester was charged with possession of 1.1 grams of meth and served an order for arrest.

He received a $20,000 bond and December 15 court date.
