A Durham man was charged Wednesday with obtaining property by false pretense after cashing a 2020-issued Economic Impact Payment check in January.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the office received information from the owner of Information Grocery that on January 27 someone had cashed a $1,200 voided check. The check was made out to Antoine Pierce, 49, the man who was charged.

Guyant said the checks are voided after a year of being printed.

The owner told Detective R.B. Biggerstaff that the check was not sufficient immediately after payment and had it in his possession.

Pierce was scheduled for a first district court appearance today.
