A person who made threatening remarks on social media concerning this weekend’s Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow was contacted by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office which “sought proper resources” for the individual.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant would only say the person was not charged criminally and declined comment when asked whether those resources were related to mental health.

He said the person was cooperative with law enforcement and “we feel the resources sought will be very beneficial.”

Guyant said the sheriff’s office was contacted earlier today. “We proactively addressed this concern with the proper diligence necessary to defuse the threat,” he said. “We can state that the individual has been properly investigated, and we have sought proper resources for them. We further de-escalated the threat by ensuring that any firearms possessed by this individual were secured for safekeeping.”

Guyant said the sheriff’s office is thankful to the community and the individual’s family “for assisting us in swiftly reducing this threat. We have contacted the Warren County Sheriff's Office and officials with the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe.”

The lieutenant said this case is an example of “when you see something, say something. It is because of a unified community-oriented effort that we feel very confident that this threat is no longer viable.”
