A Halifax County detention officer was charged today with providing tobacco to an inmate.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Derrick Anthony Bonner, 31, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged following an internal investigation.

Bonner was terminated as a result of the class 1 misdemeanor and was released on a $10,000 bond with a May 2 district court date.

“I will not tolerate any member of this office being disloyal to their personal ethics,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said. “Your name is all you have in this profession.  When you allow someone to talk you into doing something that you know is wrong you will be held accountable.  It is unfortunate that this has occurred.”
