A Roanoke Rapids couple face child sex offense charges which were lodged Friday by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Matthew Monroe Norton, 24, and his girlfriend, Alexus Yesenia Madron, 20, were both charged by SBI Agent Tyler Gohn with a count of statutory rape of a child 15 or less and indecent liberties with a child. The offense date was listed as February 1.

Interim Roanoke Rapids police Chief Gorton Williams said after receiving the report involving Norton, a city firefighter, “out of good faith” he consulted with the city manager and made the decision to refer the case to the SBI because it involved an employee.

The statutory rape count charges that Norton and Madron engaged in sexual intercourse with a female child who was 15 or younger while the indecent liberties count charges the couple “unlawfully, willingly and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit a lewd and lascivious act” with the victim.

Norton and Madron received $500,000 secured bonds and were scheduled for a first appearance in Halifax County District Court today.

City Manager Kelly Traynham said Monday no action has yet to be taken on Norton’s employment status because he is currently unavailable. Both Norton and Madron remain incarcerated while they await their first court appearances.

She said a conference with Norton will be held at the earliest opportunity. She also said Norton has not worked a shift since the charges were filed Friday night.
