Registration for the eighth annual Downtown Enfield Restoration and Preservation’s Fishing Creek Paddle is Saturday between 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Bellamy Mill.

Refreshments will be served during registration and paddlers will then shove off at 9 a.m.

The event lasts for two-and-a-half hours.

Kayaks and canoes are no longer available to rent, so paddlers must bring their own.

Fishing Creek is the largest tributary of the Tar River and is one of Halifax County’s secret treasures, DERP said. “Not only does the creek have a quiet beauty of its own, but it also has a rich history and prehistory. Shark teeth have been found near the creek and many collectors still possess examples of these massive teeth from prehistoric times.”

Fishing Creek is also cited as a location where Cornwallis’s army fought skirmishes with militiamen during the Revolutionary period.

The creek, which twists and turns as it makes its way south to the Tar River, can be navigated by both beginner and advanced kayakers.
