After a test run last year, Halifax County 4-H will be using a new full-sized bus to carry children to and from its series of summer camps.

Jerry Edmonds IV, 4-H development agent, said last year a small-scale transportation program was tested during the Summer Day Camp program by using a camp van.

The goal, he said, was to establish pick-up locations in various communities across the county to ease the burden of lengthy drive times for parents. “The commute to the 4-H Rural Life Center is not merely an inconvenience but a barrier to participation for some families who desire to have their children gain access to the endless opportunities that 4-H has to offer.”

For this season’s round of camps, 4-H has increased its carrying capacity with the addition of a new full sized bus which will carry campers to and from the center for the last three weeks at no charge. “We will be servicing two areas for each camp week and youth pre-registered for those camps may sign-up for transportation,” Edmonds said. "The 4-H motto is To Make Your Best Better, and initiatives like this serve as the incremental steps our Cooperative Extension office takes to live out this motto for our community members."
