The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Shane Guyant:

On Sunday Sergeant D. Newsome was traveling east on Highway 158 when he noticed a vehicle pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone.

The driver, identified as Semaj Montaque Sledge, drove around the Sheetz parking lot and cut through the pumps before parking in a parking space.

Newsome immediately noticed signs of impairment.

Sledge, 32, of Davie Street in Roanoke Rapids, had delayed movements and his eyes were glassy and red.

When he exited the vehicle, he stumbled as he tried to gain his balance.

A standardized field sobriety testing was attempted and Sledge performed poorly.

Sledge stated that he had been taking medication prior to driving.

A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted and it yielded several items of paraphernalia and an open container of alcohol.

Sledge was taken into custody and asked to submit to give a breath sample but refused.

Newsome obtained a search warrant and was able to obtain a blood sample for analysis.

Sledge was subsequently charged with DWI, driving while license revoked, improper passing, and open container.

He was released under a $2,500 bond and given a court date of November 17.

Last Friday Newsome was traveling south on Old Farm Road when he noticed a vehicle headed directly towards him in the opposite lane of travel.

The driver of the vehicle — Jonathan Green Jr., 32 of P&J Drive — almost collided head-on with Newsome before swerving back into his lane.

Green then swerved into the oncoming lane of travel again and struck a curb.

Newsome initiated a traffic stop.

Guyant said Green stated that he was on his phone.

Newsome noticed signs of impairment and Green admitted he had been drinking.

Newsome performed standardized field sobriety tests and Green was discovered to be impaired.

Green refused to give a breath test and Newsome obtained a search warrant for a blood sample.

Green was subsequently charged with DWI, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, driving left of center, failure to maintain lane control, and using a cellphone while operating a vehicle.

He was released under a $1,000 bond and given a November 17 court date.
