The District 1 Halifax County Board of Commissioners race is now a contested match as Ophelia Gould-Faison filed Wednesday to run against Jimmie Silver.

The District 1 seat is currently held by Commissioner Carolyn Johnson who last month announced she would not seek re-election.

Meanwhile Gary Redding filed for the Halifax County Board of Commissioners District 2 seat currently held by Commissioner John Smith. Smith will not seek re-election.

In the Halifax County Board of Education race, Barbara Wilkins on Wednesday filed to join a crowded field in that contest.

In that race the following incumbents have filed — Charles R. Hedgepeth, Carolyn W. Hawkins, Tyus Few and James E. Mills.

Challengers in the race include Wilkins, Curtis W. Young, Terri Silver and Heley Richardson.

Filing for the March 5 primary ends Friday at noon.
