Halifax County Commissioner Linda Brewer, who decided not to seek another term on her District 3 seat, released a statement today on her decision not to run again.

“My decision not to seek re-election did not come quickly nor easily,” she said. “I have enjoyed servicing the residents of Halifax County in various ways for about 50 years. I first worked for Halifax County Mental Health, then as a field representative and lastly as a county commissioner.”

She said, “I have had the privilege of working with an amazing staff, county residents, and stakeholders in the county.

“Together we have accomplished much — economic growth, two new schools being built, pay increases for the sheriff's department, a pay study for all employees, and improved access to the internet for our underserved citizens — just to name a few. All without a tax increase.”

She said when she came to the board it was upon the untimely death of Rachel Hux. “I only planned to serve one term, yet here I am seven years later. I look forward to serving out the remaining 11 months of my current term.”

Board Chairman Vernon Bryant said, “I do appreciate Commissioner Brewer filling the vacancy of the late Rachel Hux. Commissioner Brewer has proven to be an exceptional leader, confidante and friend.”

Said Bryant: “The Halifax County Board of Commissioners, staff and public will truly miss her serving on the board. Personally, I wish her godspeed in any future endeavors.”

Thomas Barrett will run for Brewer’s seat in the March 5 primary.
