After pleading not guilty to federal drug charges in September, Katoe Wardell Harris Sr. Tuesday pleaded guilty to two of the three counts a grand jury lodged against him.
Documents detailing the change of plea were not immediately available for public inspection but an entry in the federal court record notes that proceedings were held in Greenville before District Judge Terrence Boyle and that Harris appeared with his legal counsel. The assistant United States attorney and a United States probation officer were also present.
After being advised of his rights and maximum penalties, Harris entered guilty pleas to counts 1 and 2 of his indictment. Count 3 will be dismissed.
In count one Harris is charged with possession with intent to distribute crack. Count two charges that he possessed a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Count three charges that he had previously been convicted of a crime and knowingly possessed a firearm that was used in affecting commerce.
Previous court documents had indicated a possible plea deal was in the works.
Harris was named in a three-count federal indictment based on a Halifax County Sheriff’s Office investigation which led to his local arrest in January in Roanoke Rapids.
Boyle tentatively set sentencing for the March 18 term of court and Harris was remanded to custody.
