A Roanoke Rapids man waived his right Wednesday to a detention hearing after he was named in a three-count federal indictment based on a Halifax County Sheriff’s Office investigation which led to his local arrest in January.

Katoe Wardell Harris Sr. appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Kimberly A. Swank in Greenville for a detention hearing, according to federal court records.

Swank remanded Harris to custody and a notation in the record says “the court finds there is no condition or combination of conditions to reasonably assure the defendant’s appearance would not be a danger to any person or the community.”

In count one of the indictment the federal grand jury charges that Harris possessed with the intent to distribute crack. Count two charges that he possessed a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Count three charges that he had previously been convicted of a crime and knowingly possessed a firearm that was used in affecting commerce.

The indictment says that count one was committed after a prior felony conviction for a felony drug offense.

A forfeiture notice contained in the indictment says the eligible property includes the following:

A Taurus G2C .40-caliber pistol

A Taurus 9mm pistol

A Norinco 7.62-caliber rifle

A Remington Arms 1911 .45-caliber pistol

Currency in the amount of $11,168.14

All these items were seized during a January 19 raid of his Virginia Avenue residence.

An arraignment and trial date are set for the September term of court before District Judge Terrence W. Boyle.

The January raid by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office yielded multiple bags of cocaine, bags of amphetamine, Xanax, Focalin, suboxone strips, and approximately $11,100 in currency.

Four firearms were also located inside the residence.
