Roanoke Rapids Public Works Director Larry Chalker Tuesday recognized the retirement of longtime city employee Walter Johnson.
Johnson, the city’s safety coordinator and inspector, retired on November 30 after 31 years of service.
“We’re here to recognize Walter Johnson for over 31 years of very faithful and successful service for the city of Roanoke Rapids,” Chalker said.

Johnson began his tenure with the city on August 31, 1992 and transferred from planning to public works in 2011. “Walter held several jobs here but I’ll tell you what, he really performed the best job with us. Any task we would give this fellow to do we never had to check behind him. He was always very thorough and I can tell you right now we miss him every day.”
Johnson said, “The city’s been good to me for 31 years. All of y’all have been good to me.”
Mayor Emery Doughtie said, “We appreciate your service to our community. I hope you have a long and prosperous and just a good retirement.”
