The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office completed its annual Deputy Camp at the 4-H Rural Life Center.
The event began Monday and ended Thursday.
“Deputy Camp is great,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said. “Major Anzell Harris on our end spearheaded everything with the 4-H Camp. He did the scheduling. He made sure people stuck to the schedule.”
Davis said between 30 to 35 children between the ages of 6 to 14 participated.
Harris said the week’s activities included demonstrations from Medoc Mountain State Park rangers, crime scene sessions, a canine demonstration with Deputy N. Estes and his dog Rocko.
Detective Sergeant B. Edmondson discussed fingerprinting and lifting prints while Detective Sergeant A. Holland showed and discussed with the campers crime scene techniques.

There were also presentations from the state forest service, Halifax County EMS, the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department and the wildlife resources commission.
The camp culminated with a water slide and dunking booth with assistance from the Enfield Police Department.
“The weather worked out perfect for everybody who went out there,” Davis said. “Our narcotics guys were out there. Our crime scene guys went out there doing fingerprinting and mock crime scenes. Our canine guys went out there to do a canine presentation.”
There were also recreational events — kickball and volleyball. “I want to thank the Enfield Police Department for bringing out the waterslide and the dunking booth on the last day,” the sheriff said. “The kids enjoyed that. Seeing them slide down that was awesome.”
The camp was started years ago, Davis said. “I plan to keep it going for as long as I’m the sheriff. The kids really enjoy it and it’s a great relationship we build with them so they can see law enforcement in a positive light. We do what we do for the kids and the folks in our community and we want them to come out and enjoy It and be able to trust our law enforcement officers and have one on one personal relationships with them.”
