While he still remains in custody at the Halifax County Detention Center, Umel Jackson’s federal arraignment has been moved from next month to the November 25 term of court in Raleigh.
The postponement of his arraignment before United States District Judge James C. Dever comes as his new appointed counsel needs additional time to receive and review discovery with the defendant and to consider and prepare pre-trial motions.
On July 2 Jackson was indicted federally and charged with receiving a firearm in interstate commerce, while under indictment. The federal charge lodged by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is tied to a May 20 standoff with local law enforcement in Weldon.
Jackson’s initial counsel withdrew last week due to a conflict, according to court records.
Jackson has a September 23 Halifax County Superior Court date for first-degree burglary and an August 29 district court for charges tied to the standoff.
