A Weldon man with pending district court dates was jailed without the opportunity while a Roanoke Rapids man was released on bond following the discovery of cocaine in the vehicle he was driving Thursday afternoon.

Both the driver — Danny Lin Gray, 43 — and the passenger — William Lanny Owens, 30 — were charged with possession of cocaine after Deputy D. Bybee of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office stopped the vehicle in the area of Eleventh Street in Weldon around 4:30 p.m.

Bybee, according to Major Anzell Harris, observed Gray driving a vehicle with dark window tint and an expired tag.

Consent was given to search the vehicle and Bybee observed a bag of cocaine in the passenger side floorboard as the two men exited. The bag had then been moved to the passenger side seat pocket.

Gray received a $5,000 bond.

Owens, who was scheduled for a district court appearance this morning for felony cocaine, also has a December 18 district for two counts of assault on a female and resisting an officer, was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

Bybee gave Gray a verbal warning about the tint and expired registration.

The men have December 18 district court dates.

Deputy J. Horne, patrol Sergeant R. Elder, Detective G. Keel and narcotics Sergeant K. Taylor assisted.
