Snow is expected to fall from late this afternoon through early Wednesday morning.

The heaviest snowfall is expected from mid-evening until about midnight, according to the National Weather Service Raleigh bureau.

One to 3 inches of snow is expected mainly along and east of Highway 1 and the highest amounts are expected to be east of I-95.

Areas west of Highway 1 are expected to get a dusting of less than an inch.

The NWS advises, however, that areas that don’t meet winter weather advisory criteria can expect localized slick spots on roads and especially bridges due to very cold air and ground temperatures.

The extended period of bitterly cold weather is expected through Thursday morning. Early morning low temperatures the next three days will range from the upper single digits in the normally colder locations to the mid-teens elsewhere.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, possibly across all of the central part of the state and mainly along and east of Highway 1.
