Ellen Smith Foster, 72, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday April 24, 2019.

Ellen, a native of Halifax County, was the daughter of the late Staffard Samuel and Dolphine Irby Smith.

She was a graduate of NC Wesleyan where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education. Ellen retired from the Halifax County School system, having taught her entire career at Everette’s Elementary School. She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church where she taught pre-K Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Roanoke Rapids Optimist Club.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Carey Essex Foster; her daughters, Marshania Aleathea Barnes and Betty Joanna Moseley and her husband, Mike; her son Joseph Anthony Samuel “Jase” Elias and his wife, Susan all of Roanoke Rapids; her grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth Barnes, Jesse Ryan Barnes, Joseph Scott Elias and his Fiance’ Lindsey Powell and Joshua Warren Elias; two step-grandchildren, Candace Moseley and her Fiance’ Jeffery Branch and Anthony Moseley and his wife, Blake; her twin sister, Ruth Helen Daniel and her husband, Don of Knoxville, TN; her two brothers, Dr Samuel Irby Smith and his wife Crystal of Kansas City, Kansas and James Staffard Smith and his wife, Linda of Raleigh and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday April 28, 2019 at 3 P.M. at Rosemary Baptist Church with Dr Layne Wallace officiating.

Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements where the family will receive friends Saturday April 27, 2019 from 7-8:30
