James Earl Smith, 84, died peacefully at the Transitions Life Care in Cary, NC Sunday, October 7, 2018.
Mr. Smith was born in Halifax County, January 7, 1934, to the late James “Kenny” Franklin Smith and Alice Elizabeth Green Smith.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Smith worked within the textile plants in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 1956 to 1992.
After his 36 years of service locally within the textile industry, he retired as the Quality Control Manager. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Meriam Wade.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Brown Smith; two sons, James Mark Smith and wife Polly, and Richard Earl Smith and wife Kathryn, both of Raleigh, NC; sisters, Virginia Faye Langston, Carole Angela Hammack, and Marsha Gail Garner and his grandchildren, James Grant, Sloan Ashleigh, Gabriella Rose, Mary Camille, Justin Alexander, Rachel Lauren, and Hannah Grace.
The family will receive friends at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services, 731 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, NC, Wednesday, October 10, 2018, from 1-2pm. A funeral service will be held immediately after the visitation in the Chapel with Rev. Chris Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Crestwood Cemetery at 489 Smith Church Rd., Roanoke Rapids, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made, in honor of James Earl Smith, to The Trinity Church located at 4235 Aurelian Springs Rd., Halifax, NC 27839.
